Casein

Casein is one of the most popular protein supplements for athletes and active people. It is often called the "night protein" because it is absorbed slowly and supplies the body with amino acids over a long period, especially during sleep. Due to this property, casein is perfectly suited for both maintaining muscle mass and ensuring satiety.

What is casein?

Casein is the main protein in milk, making up about 80% of the proteins found in cow's milk. It is characterized by high bioavailability, a rich amino acid profile, and a special property – slow absorption.

Unlike whey proteins (concentrate or isolate), which are absorbed within 20-40 minutes, casein digestion can take 6-8 hours. This means that amino acids from it are supplied to the body gradually, ensuring a continuous supply to the muscles.

Due to its slow absorption, casein is usually consumed in the evening or before bedtime. This provides the body with protein throughout the night, while muscle recovery processes are ongoing.

Benefits of casein for the body

Slow absorption and long-term amino acid supply. Casein is an ideal choice when a long-term protein supply is needed.

Feeling of fullness and weight control. Due to slow absorption, casein helps you feel full longer, which can be useful for weight loss or dieting.

Positive effect on health. The amino acids in casein, especially glutamine, contribute to strengthening the immune system, and high-quality proteins are beneficial for skin, hair, and nails.

Benefits of casein supplements by goal

For muscle mass gain

Casein supplies muscles with amino acids for a long time, thus helping to maintain protein balance and promote muscle growth.

For post-workout recovery

While whey protein is usually consumed after a workout for its fast effect, casein is beneficial in the evening to continue the recovery process overnight.

For weight loss and a longer feeling of fullness

Casein helps reduce snacking and hunger, so it is often included in diets.

To meet overall protein needs

If you consume too little protein from food, casein supplements are a convenient way to supplement your daily diet.

Forms and types of casein

Micellar casein

This is the most natural form of casein, characterized by the longest absorption time – up to 8 hours. It is most often recommended before bed.

Casein hydrolysate

This form is pre-broken down into shorter chains, so it is absorbed faster than micellar casein.

Caseinate forms (calcium caseinate)

A slightly faster absorbing form, often used in various protein blends.

Protein blends

Many supplement manufacturers offer blends where casein is combined with whey or other proteins. Such products provide both fast and slow absorbing proteins.

How to use casein?

  • Before bed: a classic choice, as it ensures muscle nourishment overnight.
  • Between meals: when a longer feeling of fullness is needed.
  • During diets: to help control hunger.

Casein can be mixed with water, milk, or plant-based beverages. It is also often used in baking or making protein desserts.

A typical serving of casein supplement is about 25-30g of powder, providing ~20-25g of protein. The frequency of consumption depends on the daily protein requirement.

How to choose the right casein?

Based on protein content per serving. Look for a product with at least 70-80% protein.

Based on absorption time and type. If you want a long-lasting effect – choose micellar casein, if faster – hydrolysate.

Based on taste and solubility. Casein dissolves harder than whey protein, so it is worth choosing a well-dissolving option with a taste you like.

Casein compared to other proteins

Casein vs whey protein (concentrate and isolate)

Although both casein and whey proteins are derived from milk, they have different properties and benefits.

Digestion rate: Whey proteins are quickly digested and absorbed, making them perfect for post-workout recovery when muscles need immediate nutrients. Casein, on the other hand, is slowly digested, meaning it breaks down into amino acids over a long period. This property makes it excellent for consumption before bed, ensuring your muscles are nourished with amino acids throughout the night.

Satiety: Due to its slow digestion rate, casein can help you feel full longer, reducing the need for nighttime snacking. This way, calorie intake is controlled, and it is easier to manage your weight.

Muscle preservation: During a calorie deficit, the body uses both fats and proteins as nutrients. The slow breakdown of casein into amino acids helps nourish muscles, making it an excellent choice for preserving muscle mass during long periods without food, such as during nighttime sleep.

Casein vs egg whites

Egg whites have a medium absorption rate, so they can be combined with casein.

Casein vs plant-based proteins

Plant-based proteins are suitable for vegans, but often do not have as long an absorption time as casein.
