What is MCT oil?

MCT (Medium-Chain Triglycerides) refers to medium-chain triglycerides. It is a type of fat whose molecules are shorter than those of most common fats (long-chain triglycerides, LCT).

A shorter chain means that these fats in the body:

  • are digested faster,
  • travel directly to the liver,
  • are more quickly converted into energy or ketone bodies.

For this reason, MCT oil is considered "fast fuel" – it does not accumulate as stored fat but is used immediately.

Types of MCT fats

MCT oil consists of several fatty acids:

  • C6 (caproic acid): absorbed very quickly, but has an unpleasant taste and odor. Rarely used.
  • C8 (caprylic acid): converted into ketones the fastest, considered the most effective form of MCT.
  • C10 (capric acid): also quickly used for energy, but slightly slower than C8.
  • C12 (lauric acid): technically classified as MCT, but acts more like long-chain fats. It is mostly found in coconut oil.

The purest MCT oil is usually composed of C8 and C10 acids, as they provide the best balance between a fast energy source and good tolerance.

Origin and production of MCT oil

MCT oil is typically produced from:

  • coconut oil (about 60% of which is MCT),
  • palm kernel oil.

During production, fractionation and distillation technologies are used to separate specific fatty acids (usually C8 and C10).

The result is a tasteless and odorless liquid that is easily mixed into drinks or dishes.

How does MCT oil affect the body?

  1. Rapid absorption: MCT no longer requires complex digestion; the fats travel directly to the liver.
  2. Energy production: in the liver, MCTs are converted into energy or ketone bodies.
  3. Ketone bodies: an alternative energy source, especially important for the keto diet and brain function.
  4. Thermogenic effect, which can increase energy expenditure and calorie burning.

Benefits of MCT oil

Fast source of energy

MCTs are among the fastest-utilized fats. Athletes use them before workouts because they provide quick energy without sugar spikes.

Support for weight management

  • Increases the feeling of satiety (reduces the production of the hunger hormone, ghrelin).
  • Can increase calorie expenditure by 5–10% per day.
  • Helps to stick to a diet more easily, especially low-carb diets.

Keto diet support

MCTs are converted into ketones very quickly, which is why they are a popular choice in the keto community. They help to reach ketosis faster and maintain energy levels even when carbohydrate intake is low.

Benefits for sports

  • Improves endurance by providing a constant source of energy.
  • May reduce the buildup of lactic acid during workouts.

Brain function support

Ketone bodies can be an alternative source of energy for the brain. Studies show that MCTs can improve cognitive functions, especially in older adults or those with Alzheimer's disease.

How to use MCT oil?

The usual dose is 1–3 tablespoons per day, but it is recommended to start with a smaller dose and increase it gradually.

It is suitable for use in the morning, before a workout, or with food.

How to use:

  • mix into coffee ("bulletproof coffee"),
  • add to protein shakes,
  • pour over salads.

Important: MCT oil is not suitable for frying at high temperatures because it is not stable when heated.

Types of MCT oil and choosing one

C8 (caprylic acid)

  • Converted into ketones the fastest.
  • More expensive, but the most effective for keto energy.

C8 + C10 blends

  • The most popular option, usually found on the market.
  • A good balance between price and effectiveness.

C12 (lauric acid)

  • Although technically classified as an MCT, it acts similarly to long-chain fats.
  • Less effective for quick energy gain.

Comparison of MCT oil with other fats

  • With coconut oil: coconut oil only has about 55–60% MCT, while pure MCT oil is a concentrated source of MCT.
  • With omega-3 and omega-6: MCTs are not essential fatty acids, so they do not replace omega-3 or omega-6.
  • With common fats: MCTs are quickly used for energy, while long-chain fats (LCT) are stored more.

Possible side effects

Although MCT oil is considered safe, it can cause discomfort if consumed in excess. Symptoms include bloating, diarrhea, or nausea. Most often, these symptoms occur when starting with large doses.

Who is MCT oil for?

  • Those on a keto or low-carb diet.
  • Athletes looking for quick energy.
  • Individuals aiming to lose weight and maintain a feeling of satiety.
  • Older adults wanting to support brain function.
  • Anyone looking for an alternative energy source.

MCT oil is a source of medium-chain triglycerides extracted from coconut or palm oil, characterized by rapid absorption and unique properties. MCT oil is not a miracle cure, but when used properly, it can be a valuable dietary supplement. As with all supplements, moderation, quality, and combining it with a balanced diet and an active lifestyle are most important.
