CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) is one of the most studied fatty acids that can help with weight management, improve body composition, and support overall health. It has gained significant popularity among athletes and those looking to lose weight, as it is associated with fat reduction and the maintenance of muscle mass.

What is CLA

CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) is a group of linoleic acid (also known as omega-6 acid) isomers. Unlike regular linoleic acid, the double bonds in the CLA molecule are arranged differently ("conjugated"), which gives it a unique effect on the human body.

CLA is not a single compound – it is a mixture of various isomers.

Naturally, CLA is found in animal products, especially meat and dairy products from grass-fed cattle. In supplements, CLA is usually derived from vegetable oils.

Natural Sources

CLA is mostly found in:

  • beef and lamb,
  • dairy products (milk, yogurt, cheese, butter),
  • it is especially abundant in products from grass-fed cows.

In a regular diet, 0.2 to 0.5 g of CLA is obtained daily. Meanwhile, the doses used in studies are much higher – 3-6 g per day. Therefore, supplements provide a concentrated amount of CLA that is difficult to obtain from a regular diet.

How CLA Works

The mechanisms of CLA's action are not fully understood, but scientists identify several possible ways:

  • Fat metabolism regulation: CLA can promote fatty acid oxidation and reduce lipogenesis (fat accumulation).
  • Increased lipolysis: processes that break down fats can be activated in fat cells.
  • Muscle mass maintenance: some studies suggest that CLA may reduce muscle breakdown during dieting.
  • Effect on immunity and inflammation: CLA may have an anti-inflammatory effect.

Benefits of CLA

Weight Control and Fat Reduction

CLA is most commonly used as a tool for weight loss and body fat control. Studies show that the effect is statistically significant: long-term use (12-24 weeks) can help reduce body fat by about 1-2 kg compared to placebo.

Muscle Mass Maintenance

When exercising and maintaining a calorie deficit, CLA can help maintain more muscle mass. This is especially relevant in bodybuilding and strength sports.

Cholesterol and Lipid Profile

Some studies indicate that CLA may reduce total cholesterol and triglycerides.

Antioxidant and Anti-inflammatory Properties

CLA has antioxidant properties that can help reduce oxidative stress. It may also have an anti-inflammatory effect.

CLA Supplements

  • Capsules: the most common form, convenient for dosing.
  • Liquid oil: less common, harder to dose, but suitable for consumption with food.
  • Combinations: CLA is often combined with other supplements (L-carnitine, green tea extract, MCT oil).

Recommended Dosages and Use

  • Studies typically use CLA doses of 3-6 g per day.
  • The dose is best divided into 2-3 servings with food.
  • The effect appears gradually, usually after several weeks.
  • For long-term use, it is important to monitor your well-being and follow recommendations.

Possible Side Effects

CLA is considered safe for most people when consumed in recommended doses. However, possible side effects include digestive problems (bloating, diarrhea, nausea), so it is important not to consume excessive doses and follow manufacturer's instructions.

Who CLA is Most Suitable For

  • Those seeking to reduce body fat and maintain a healthier body composition.
  • Athletes who want to maintain muscle mass during dieting.
  • Those avoiding red meat or dairy products, which naturally contain CLA.

How to Choose a Quality CLA Supplement?

  • Dose: one capsule should contain 750-1000 mg of CLA.
  • Source: it is best if CLA is extracted from quality vegetable oils.
  • Combinations: if buying a complex, ensure that the CLA content is sufficient, not just symbolic.

When used systematically, combined with a healthy diet and physical activity, CLA can be a useful complementary tool for both athletes and people seeking weight control.
