L-Carnitine

L-carnitine is one of the most popular food supplements for both athletes and those looking to lose excess weight. It is an amino acid derivative that plays a very important role in the human body – helping fats enter mitochondria, where they are used to produce energy.
The body produces a certain amount of L-carnitine itself, but supplementation can be beneficial when more energy, physical endurance, or faster fat loss is desired.

What is L-carnitine?

L-carnitine is a substance synthesized in the liver and kidneys from two amino acids – lysine and methionine. Its main role is to transport fats into mitochondria (the "powerhouses" of cells, where fats are burned and converted into energy). Without a sufficient amount of l-carnitine, fats remain unused, therefore additional carnitine intake can enhance fat oxidation.

Carnitine was first isolated from muscle tissue in 1905 and later, due to its abundance in meat, was named after the Latin word "carnus," meaning meat.

Carnitine exists in two forms: d-carnitine and l-carnitine. D-carnitine is not naturally found in animals, as it inhibits the action of l-carnitine, so d-carnitine is not used in food supplements.

Most l-carnitine is found in muscles, as it is extremely important for muscle growth, structure, and recovery after workouts.

How does l-carnitine affect the body?

The mechanism explaining why l-carnitine is considered one of the most important supplements for both weight loss and athletic performance:

  1. Fat transport: l-carnitine allows fatty acids to enter mitochondria.
  2. Energy production: In mitochondria, fats are converted into ATP, which the body uses as a "fuel source."
  3. Stimulating fat oxidation: The more l-carnitine there is, the more fat can be used for energy instead of being stored in adipose tissue.

Sources of L-carnitine in food

Most L-carnitine is found in animal products:

  • red meat (beef, lamb),
  • fish (cod, salmon),
  • poultry,
  • dairy products.

A typical mixed diet provides about 20–200 mg of l-carnitine per day, but for athletes, those on diets, or those with increased needs, this may not be enough.

In vegetarian and vegan diets, l-carnitine is naturally very low, so supplements are especially relevant for this group.

Benefits of L-carnitine

For weight loss

  • Using fat for energy is especially effective during physical activity when the body needs a lot of energy.
  • More energy during diet: When in a caloric deficit, fatigue is often felt, and l-carnitine helps maintain energy.
  • Help with routine: Increased stamina and reduced fatigue make it easier to stick to a training plan.

Although research results on direct fat reduction vary, most scientific sources agree that l-carnitine helps to more effectively use fat as energy, which indirectly contributes to weight control.

Benefits for athletes

  • Increasing endurance: During long workouts, the body can use fat for energy longer, thus saving glycogen stores.
  • Faster recovery: Reduces muscle damage and oxidative stress after intense workouts.
  • Less lactic acid: L-carnitine can reduce lactic acid accumulation, thus reducing fatigue.
  • Muscle mass protection: By sustaining energy from fats, l-carnitine helps reduce muscle protein breakdown.

Health benefits

In addition to its effects on weight loss and sports, L-carnitine also has other benefits:

  • Heart health: Some studies show that l-carnitine can improve heart function in cases of heart failure or ischemic disease.
  • Sugar metabolism: Can help improve insulin sensitivity and glucose control.
  • Fatigue reduction: Optimizing energy production helps you feel more alert.

Dosage and use

  • Typical daily dose: 500–2000 mg per day.
  • For sports: usually 1000–2000 mg before training.
  • For weight loss: recommended to take in the morning on an empty stomach or before training (preferably 30–60 minutes before physical activity).
  • Course of use: 6–8 weeks, after which a break is recommended.

Important: It is not recommended to exceed the daily dose of 3000 mg, as this does not increase effectiveness but can cause digestive discomfort.

Combining L-carnitine with other supplements

L-carnitine can be combined with:

  • Fat burners: Enhanced effect on fat oxidation, as several mechanisms act simultaneously (thermogenesis + fat transport).
  • Proteins: Better recovery and muscle mass maintenance.
  • BCAAs: Less muscle breakdown during intense workouts.
  • B vitamins: Support energy metabolism.

Side effects

L-carnitine is generally safe and well-tolerated. Possible side effects when taking excessive doses can include nausea, abdominal pain, or diarrhea. Most users experience no problems if they adhere to recommended dosages.

Who is L-carnitine recommended for?

  • Athletes looking to improve endurance and recovery.
  • Those aiming for weight loss, as it helps use fat more efficiently for energy.
  • Vegetarians and vegans, whose diet contains almost no L-carnitine.

Acetyl-l-carnitine (ALC)

Acetyl-l-carnitine is an acetylated form of l-carnitine that more easily crosses the blood-brain barrier. Acetyl-l-carnitine is often used to improve cognitive functions, mood, and energy balance.

The human body easily converts l-carnitine to acetyl-l-carnitine and vice versa.

Main benefits of acetyl-l-carnitine:

  • Support for cognitive functions (memory, attention, concentration).
  • Can reduce fatigue, support nervous system health.
  • Being studied as a means to slow down aging processes and manage some neurological diseases (Alzheimer's, depression).

What is the difference between l-carnitine and acetyl-l-carnitine?

Key differences

Feature L-carnitine Acetyl-l-carnitine
Site of action Mostly in muscles, liver, heart Brain
Main effect Fat transport to mitochondria, energy production Cognitive functions, nervous system support
Benefits for sports Increases endurance, helps burn fat Less impact on fat burning
Health benefits Weight control, heart health Memory, mood, nervous system
Primary benefit For athletes, those looking to lose weight For those looking to support brain activity, especially in old age

If the goal is weight loss and athletic endurance, l-carnitine is the best choice. If the goal is to support brain activity, memory, or combat fatigue, then acetyl-L-carnitine is more valuable.

Summary

L-carnitine is a natural, safe, and effective food supplement that helps convert fat into energy. It is beneficial for athletes, those aiming to lose weight, or simply maintain an energy balance.

Additional l-carnitine intake can provide more strength, improve workout quality, and accelerate recovery. And when combined with a proper diet and physical activity, it becomes a powerful helper on the path to better shape and well-being.
